Microsoft distributes bug fixes in vendor packages. Service packs keep your product or service up to date. Service packs are updated and may include systems management tools, truck drivers and add-ons bundled together for easy download. Service kits are cumulative. Each new servicing group contains all the fixes that might be in previous service packs, as well as any new fixes. There is no need to install the latest service pack before installing the latest one. For example, you definitely don’t need to install SQL Server 2000 SP1 before installing SQL Server 2000 SP2.

Note. Since most of the changes made in SP3a are installation-related, you should apply them to instances of SQL Server 2000 or MSDE 2000 that were recently upgraded to SP3 instead of SP3a.

However, if you have instances that have not yet been upgraded to SP3, you really should always upgrade those instances directly to SP3a instead of SP3. If you have copies of the SP3 download files that you need to plan for future updates, you should remove those copies and use the SP3a downloads or the SP3a CD instead.

Distributed Applications and MSDE 2000 must install SP3a on Place SP3. Although instances of SQL Server 2000 SP3 and / or MSDE 2000 SP3 with Service Pack 3a can be used as needed, these instances have little impact.
