I keep seeing errors logged in the syslog when running the nightly backup experiment:

    service control manager debug logging

Event 7005, Service Control Manager. Failed to call LoadUserProfilewith the following error: The system cannot find the specified main file.

I know in which directory the process backup is stored, the error also says that a particular file cannot be found, but Windows Event Viewer doesn’t seem to show exactly which file is missing.

Is there an alternative to switching to verbose methods or getting a more meaningful log of what Windows can’t find?

The events that SERVICES.EXE writes to the system log are the easiest to detect.in the view event only versions whose source is specified as Service Control ManagerEvent log provider. Interior, it’s just a localized friendly word, as is customaryobviously. The official name of the provider of all events is simply Service Control.Director. This is what is stored in the registry. This is what you will see next in detailtab for the event in the application toolEvent Viewer and this is the check mark you have to monitorthis organization with tools like WEVTUTIL for reliability and performanceWatch. readabilitydata=”0″>

Events from this provider will attempt to access the system log in the Fine Event Viewer because Windowsfixed for registration to take advantage of this provider already configured as a specific publisherto the system event log session.

It might be a good idea to summarize that when SERVICES fires these events,Syslog, it’s not a manifest-based provider that comes with the toolsIt is clear that this is also not quite what the guide calls a classic house. The way it triggers events is very exotic. Early versions are probably simpleusers of the features through which Microsoft Documents for Event Logging, such asRegisterEventSource and ReportEventbut in principle there was an important recoding under Windows XP. SERVICES is Windows todayWMI (Management Instrumentation) event provider and just unrelated non-COMSuppliers. The non-COM aspect is not documented. Indeed, each of our sitesproviderHosting Security and its Windows SDK explicitly state that some type of Decoupled:NoncomThe hosting model is “colon only” and “not supported”. SERVICE is oneits very few users. It relies on undocumented features like WmiCreateObjectWithFormat for examplewmiEventSourceConnect, and WmiSetAndCommitObject implemented inNCOBJAPI.DLL. WMI

provider in SERVICES automatically calls the SCM event provider, i would say rootcimv2namespace. Besides using the non-COM API, providing an event log is just as easy.as with any WMI event provider. Every event they can is a managed object that is rendered as well.via WMI conference. However, the parameters that can be passed through an event are represented byclass members. The domain name is the class and the names related to the parametershardcodedThey are in SERVICES, which are now registered with WMI at runtime. Appointmentthese managed objects depend on Windows events to map their names to valuescompiled into the WMI repository from a source file named SCM.MOF(located in the WBEM subdirectory of the Windows system directory).

On the contrary, the use of these events in Windows Vista is cutting edge.Rendering in the event viewer depends on the definitions in the instrumentation manifest.which Microsoft provides as quitinside the manifest representing the SERVICES as an assembly. Be sure to refer toNote the SERVICE versions for name and location.Instrumenting or detecting their presence is also compiled into a SERVICES resource type as WEVT_TEMPLATE.

These actions are provided by MOF files but are used by manifests.convenient, although very small: as shown below, onNot moving the MOF file means that the recurring events become one. I probably don’t wear itConfused others, Microsoft may have already fixed it.

Another consequence reported for completeness onlys pictures – this is the willThe provider GUID name specified in the manifest is not explicitly used.in the SERVICE code.

    Possible Events

The following large table lists all scenarios where SERVICES is registered.WMI in the name of the firewood system (not that it necessarily matters muchevents can actually happen). Descriptions reproduced from the respective show.and a message map resource in the SERVICES executable. Because the tidymanifest parameters only as param1,param2 or more, descriptions in placeholders are realinstead solved with the definitions in my SERVICE code below and in SCM.MOF.
