How to handle a kept back package in Ubuntu?

Best way to organize your saved packages: When viewing your saved packages, you should include the packages to upgrade at the top of the exact list. Your package is held in place. There are usually two reasons why your website might see this message. If building the program (with sudo apt-get upgrade) results in packages being added or removed, the program will be saved.

Although the general idea of ”packages on hold” has already gotten a very good answer here: something strange has happened these days … 4.8.0-42 suggested for installation. I ran sudo dist-upgrade apt, or after restarting the main body (Ubuntu 16.10 workstation), rushed to a new kernel.

Not many hours have passed since I wanted to update my Ubuntu server installation, but no new kernel was offered. To double-check the situation, I restored the Clonezilla system image backup I took last night to an Ubuntu workstation and checked the situation again. This time, the kernel was no longer offered. It looks like kernel 4.8.0-42 was accidentally pushed to the main repository and is also about to discover a repulsive collection – possibly Canonical encountered a new error. Yes

You only used the Ubuntu 16.04 HWE stack, which means you are still using the Ubuntu 16.10 4.8 kernel. So first things go to the whole kernel in Ubuntu 16.10, every possible explanation of how long the upgrade process will take for most of the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS repositories.

How to roll back the kernel version on Ubuntu?

If you go directly to the server, you can use the special “Advanced Options for Ubuntu” in the grub dishes when the system boots and maybe choose the correct kernel, but after a system restart, it will always boot last. To boot a system with a final kernel, open the Grub configuration list in a text editor:

If clients later run sudo apt update again, the detected message should no longer appear. Conclusion: do not run sudo dist-upgrade accordingly and wait until the databases are updated and the message about the saved kernel packages is no longer displayed. The same thing happened to everyone who installed the 4.8.0-40 kernel some time ago.

Since I am a relatively new and important Ubuntu user, I ran into the same problem and seem to have fixed it. I found that there were three pending Ubuntu software updates with the same names usually displayed on the terminal as shown below:

    ubuntu kernel updates held back

The following deliveries were accepted:linux-generic-hwe-16.04 linux-headers-generic-hwe-16.04 linux-image-generic-hwe-16.040 updated, 0 new, 0 installed, removed and 3 not updated.

After downloading these updates from the Ubuntu software, I went back to terminal and just executed sudo apt-get update plus sudo apt-get upgrade . Result:

The actual packages were installed automatically and are no longer needed: linux-4.8.0-41 linux-headers-4.8.0-41-generic linux-headers-4.8.0-44 linux-headers-4.8.0-44-generic linux-image-4.8.0-41- generic linux-image-4.8.0-44-generic linux-image-extra-4.8.0-41-generic linux-image-extra-4.8.0-44-genericUse sudo apt autoremove to remove them.0 updated, 0 installed, new, 0 removed and 0 not updated.

  • I can’t find an expert, I think the Ubuntu software settings are meant to address eof that problem. And the problem is undoubtedly that there is no doubt that there is no complete communication between the Ubuntu laptop or computer and the apt-get service packs and enhancements. I’m sure you will find another better explanation, but I wanted to share this with you.
