Editor’s note: when I loaded the same video file into the MediaInfo fireplace it was displaying mp4a-40-2 audio codec (format: AAC LC), but our own ffprobe output displays mp4a (format: AAC LC). I am not an expert on media file formats, but he concluded that I was missing some detail in the output of the FFprobe codec, although the additional information might not make much of a difference to the end user.

It looks like the default MediaInfo has accurate information about one or more codecs, at least in this beautiful example. Perhaps I missed the command line mouse which gives details about the codec, or some additional information is less important. I’ll try and find out. Other tools such as G-Spot (see later in this article) also only displayed mp4a: MPEG-4 AAC LC (no subtype information) in the codec info field.

GSpot

GSpot is a good tool that will give you detailed information about the codec used in audio and video files. Can the site tell you if any AVI content is using DivX or XviD and which version, what type of MPEG codec is used (not DVD format), etc.

This tool was updated ten years ago, but works equally well on Windows 10. One drawback is that with mp4, when it comes to file types, the tool often fails to display the file status (regardless of whether is it on the computer or not) codec. “Codec status not detected” is always displayed.

VLC Player

If you can make the video file aware using VLC Player on another computer (where my particular codec is installed), you can view the codec information by clicking Tools – Codec Information.

Video Inspector

VideoInspector is a module designed to provide as much information as possible about a video file. With VideoInspector, you can find out why there is little audio in the videos in your files, or why games are correctly rejecting games.

As you can see, this tutorial video uses XviD MPEG-4 and MPEG 9 or 2 sound layers for three codecs (MP3) for video and sound respectively.

(Although VideoInspector was recently updated, it does not work well with MP4 images. Also, some users have noticed that the software displays incorrect speed informationdata transfer.)

AVIcodec

AVIcodec is often a similar tool that can be used to determine the codec used in video files. Some video files require additional codecs to play, such as DivX, VCD and others. If you have this kind of file support with little or no correct codec installed, you will receive an error message or only have short access to audio playback.

(AVIcodec is another legacy utility. It does not support MKV or MP4 file formats.)

(Also check with the installecodec utility, which will display the exact list of codecs installed on our system.)

Here oo is a two-digit hexadecimal object type designator that describes a codec class that is used only for multimedia.
