I am trying to return my friend’s Compaq computer via the specified USB drive and am preparing to upgrade to XP. Compaq offers Windows ME. Its hard drive is all Maxtor 30GB (I assume) and runs in FAT32. My USB stick is a bunch of XP Home Edition laptops formatted to NTFS. Compaq does not recognize the USB storage device in any way. I tried installing the drivers on a USB stick, but it may still not work. I know the normal push setup (my hard drive) works because it works stress-free on my laptop.
I also want to remove the hard drive from Compaq, install it in an external case and connect it to my laptop. I’ve tried some kind of jumper in all possible roles. The laptop does not recognize its own USB storage device.
I was wondering exactly how the problem is solved in the file format. Is there a way to back up a portion of a Compaq drive without reformatting the USB drive? Also, is it something else that the computer doesn’t recognize, do you see the drive?

Does Windows XP support FAT32 USB?

NTFS volumes are not affected. When I connect my current NTFS drives, they are recognized right from these locations. I even have a weird disk with two partitions, the front one is NTFS which is known and the other is FAT32 which is not recognized.
If I connect a FAT32 drive and then reboot, there is no doubt that this drive will almost always be visible on a particular computer after reboot.

Prior to this problem, I always I pressed the Safely Remove button to access everything, including the plastic SDHC cards, which I don’t think are attached.
